We thought this would be a good time to update you about what's going on in the art room by grade level.
Kinder Prep - Our kiddos have been working on classroom expectations and learning about the art room. Lately they've been practicing lots of cutting. And now we're just learning some basics of painting. Everyone is excited about that!
Kindergarten - Much like our kinder prep, our kindergarteners have been working on classroom expectations and learning about the art room. We recently read the story "Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert and practiced cutting on a line to make our leaves. Next up students learned about warm and cool colors and sponge painted with our warm colors to decorate the leaves. Fall leaves should be on their way home soon!
1st - Students are working on creating space in their artwork. After collaging trees, we have been talking about the horizon line and how to show distance. Students drew things BIG if they're close and little if they're far away in a picture.
2nd - Students are working on drawing people proportions and using shapes to draw people. Our people are taking the form of scarecrows for this particular fall project! Students are also being introduced to the drawing and painting centers in the art room.
UPPER GRADES
Over the last couple years we've been focusing our upper grades on a choice-based curriculum. Students are introduced to centers (divided up by material, i.e. drawing center, painting center, collage center, etc), then allowed to work more like artists creating artwork based on their own inspirations, ideas and plans. The focus of our lessons are on broader studio habits which we'll discuss in more depth later.
So far this year we have been creating our portfolios, our 1st masterpiece drawings, and finally our 4th and 5th grade students have been catching up on glazing clay projects from last year. Soon they will be headed to the kiln for our glaze firing. It seems a little strange for this time of year! Usually this is a spring time activity for us!
Portfolios - to store our classroom work-in-progress and assessments
Masterpiece - focusing on what artists draw. "Artists draw what they see, what they remember, what they imagine and what they feel.
Artsonia - Hopefully students will be relearning how to upload artwork to our Artsonia website very soon!
3rd - Monsters! Texture! OooooooO! We are learning about collage by creating monsters in our class and incorporating textures with texture plates or found texture.
4th & 5th - Students are reviewing the drawing and paint centers. With the current project students are learning about symmetry and how to transfer a drawing. We're using this technique to have some fun creating symmetrical people or creatures. Students then add elements of art (line, color, texture) to decorate and create a crayon resist.
